A light, crackling-crusted baguette filled with pâté, cold cuts or grilled meat, pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, coriander and chilli.
What makes it bánh mì
A light, airy roll with a thin, crackling crust.
Pâté and butter or mayonnaise, with cold cuts, grilled pork or egg.
Pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, coriander and fresh chilli.
Where it comes from
The baguette came with the French. By the middle of the twentieth century Saigon bakers had made it their own — lighter, with a thin crust that shatters — and filled it with things the French would not have. Bánh mì simply means bread; the sandwich took the name.
