Grenadine
Pomegranate syrup — grenade is French for pomegranate — sweet-tart and deep red. The supermarket kind is usually corn syrup and red colouring.

- Make it: it's far better than anything you can buy cheaply.

- Equal weights of pomegranate juice and sugar, stirred until dissolved without heat to keep it fresh. A few drops of pomegranate molasses and orange-flower water make it taste more of the fruit.
