Cape Malay chicken curry

Also Cape curry, Kerrie hoender

A mild, fragrant curry of chicken and potatoes with tomato and whole spices — sweeter and gentler than Durban's.

What makes it cape malay chicken curry

  • Onion browned slowly with whole spices and masala.
  • Chicken and potatoes cooked together in tomato.
  • Fragrant rather than fiery; a little sweetness.

Where it comes from

Cape curries are softer than those of Durban's Indian community: more fragrant than hot, with cinnamon and cardamom, a little sweetness, and potatoes cooked in the sauce. Every household's masala is its own, and many are bought by the scoop from the spice shops of Cape Town.

It's served with rice or roti, sambals of grated vegetable with chilli and vinegar, and fruit chutney.
